“My heart is firmly fixed, O God, my heart is firmly fixed;I will sing and make melody.”
Psalm 108: 1
Schola Antiqua
Founded in 2008, The Schola Antiqua is St. Thomas’s only professional ensemble. As indicated by its name, the Schola Antiqua is dedicated to the study and stylistic performance of a cappella music from 1600 and before. While the group sings in the traditional Roman Parish Style (one person per part), the ensemble generally studies one nationality of music per semester. The ensemble meets weekly for a brief rehearsal and generally sings the choral prelude at weekly Eucharist and choral mass for Christmas and other feast days throughout the year. Participation in the Schola required classical training in vocal performance and an audition, those interested should contact David Jernigan. The Schola Antiqua offers their work both to the glory of God and as an act appreciation for the masters who came before us. Those master musicians whose hard work, faith and dedication to the art of composition have left with music that transcends the confines of time and speaks every bit as poignantly to our world today as it did to theirs hundreds of years ago.
Adult Choir
While congregational singing is a cornerstone of worship at St. Thomas’s, the Adult Choir has a longstanding tradition of providing excellent music for regular Sunday morning and evening liturgies throughout the academic year in the form of anthems and Anglican Chant Psalms. The choir is made up of both professionals and volunteers who come from varying levels of musical experience. Despite singing a wide variety of music, their repertoire draws largely from the great wealth of Romantic and Twentieth-Century music written for use in Anglican liturgies. Due to their growing reputation for musical excellence, they have been invited to sing services at the Chapel Royal, Windsor Castle as well as a five-day residency at Gloucester Cathedral in August of 2011. The Adult Choir rehearses every Thursday night from 7:30 – 9pm, generally from the end of August – Trinity Sunday.
