“Our worship and work” this Sunday promises to be quite lively:
Mother Mo will preach, and our liturgy at ten o’clock will be our monthly Children’s Liturgy. If your child is interested in taking an age-appropriate leadership role in our worship, please contact Mother Mo.
Funeral services for Pam Wallgren will be held at St. Thomas's this Thursday evening, March 4, at 7:00 pm, followed by a reception for everyone in the Lounge/Common Room.
In the brief time Pam lived in New Haven, not all the parish would have gotten to know her. Her illness kept her from being integrated as fully into parish life as she would have liked. But, those who came to know her well were deeply touched by Pam. Her courage was strength to us all.
We have received word that Pam Wallgren died at hospice yesterday, not long after receiving last rites. A number of St. Thomas's folks were there mid-morning, and she was surrounded by her family when she died in the afternoon.
This Sunday marks the official end of Helen Bailey's internship at St. Thomas's. In only eight weeks, she has made a significant impression on many of us. I know you will want to be on hand to wish her Godspeed as she prepares to return to the U.K. and complete her ordination process. Members of the Fiber Arts Guild, with whom Helen has spent Thursday mornings, will present her with a prayer shawl as a memento of her time with us.
As we prepare for worship on Sunday, please be aware of the following information from the Millennium Development Goals Committee of St. Thomas’s:
Please join us this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. for a special service of Solemn Evensong. Prayers will be offered for the people of Haiti, and the offering will go to the support the efforts of Episcopal Relief and Development in Haiti. Music will be provided by the Adult and Senior Youth Choirs and will feature American composers Sowerby and Jernigan (yes, our own David Jernigan). The settings for the canticles are among those that will be taken to England when our choir tours in 2011. The service will include the use of incense.
This Sunday, during a Pot Luck Coffee Hour, we will meet for St. Thomas’s One- Hundred-Sixty-Second Annual Parish Meeting. Do plan to worship at the ten o’clock service, celebrate the ministries of the parish, enjoy fellowship together, and meet those who have come to St. Thomas’s recently and during the past year. We will do the business expeditiously and save most of the time for building fellowship and community.
Please bring a dish to share – protein and more filling fare!
St. Thomas's Episcopal Church will offer a Choral Evensong service on Sunday, January 31, at 5:00 p.m. Choral Evensong is a form of Evening Prayer in which most of the service is sung. The church's choirs will sing anthems by Thomas Tallis and Sir Edward Baitstow and canticles by Leo Sowerby. The prayers and responses will be sung to a setting by David Jernigan, St. Thomas's director of music and liturgical arts.
Christmas is just around the corner, so there are a few reminders and announcements!
Tonight is the annual Greening of the Church. 6 p.m. is a potluck -- bring a dish to share. At 7 p.m. we will "green" the church and sing carols around the piano. It should be a lovely night, and we hope to see you here!
This will be very brief. As many of you know, Fr. Ray has been sick all week and will not be in church on Sunday. Mother Mo will be in the driver's seat this weekend.
I was notified late Thursday evening that Dorothy Asch was taken to St. Raphael's Hospital. Mother Mo has been to see Dorothy and reports that she might be in the hospital for at least a week. Dorothy would love to have visitors. She is in West 322.
