Letter from the Rector and Parish News, December 10

This Sunday at ten o’clock, the choirs of St. Thomas’s will lead us in music for Advent Lessons and Carols. This is a venerable tradition of the Anglican Church and a once-a-year opportunity to enjoy beloved musical settings such as the Palestrina Matins Responsory. As in previous years, we will celebrate with five lessons, rather than the traditional nine lessons. A sermon is not part of this liturgy.

Children’s Liturgy coincides with Lessons and Carols. Both the Junior and Senior Youth Choirs will share leadership roles with the Adult Choir, and children will have age-appropriate leadership roles in worship. The morning will conclude with a “pot luck” brunch at coffee hour. Do feel free to bring something to share. Bring neighbors and friends who have not yet been introduced to St. Thomas’s.

A few paper ornaments from Covenant to Care still remain on the tree in the Common Room/Lounge. A contribution of $10 will remove one and insure that another of our foster children will receive a gift this Christmas!

You will also be able to shop Fair Trade items this Sunday during coffee hour. Consider giving these items as gifts and stocking stuffers; each purchase represents a just compensation for those who labor, tend, and harvest the crops. Actually, St. Thomas’s uses Fair Trade coffee every Sunday morning—so your presence at coffee hour is an exercise in community-building and fellowship as well as an expression of outreach ministry.

Faithfully,
Fr. Ray+
