About Our Worship
St. Thomas's is part of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut, which is part of the The Episcopal Church, which is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. The Episcopal Church a unique combination of traditional liturgical worship and progressive embodied theology.
At St. Thomas's, worship is the heart of our faith community. Drawing on the richness of our Anglican heritage in theology, liturgy, and music, we seek a closer relationship with God and each other as we gather together to share the Good News in word, song, and sacrament. Worship at St. Thomas's is grounded in the approved liturgies of The Episcopal Church, most commonly as we find them in the 1979 Book of Common Prayer. While living within our tradition, we are open to new liturgical forms. There are many ways that parishioners can participate in liturgy at St. Thomas's.
Sunday worship usually includes scripture readings, a sermon, hymns, and choral anthems. It always includes the celebration of Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion). The congregation gathers around the altar for this part of the service, a practice that has great meaning for many. Everyone is welcome to join us in worship and to receive Holy Communion. A large proportion of parishioners come to us from other faith traditions, most commonly the Roman Catholic Church. St. Thomas's has long been a welcoming haven for people from a variety of backgrounds.
